We discuss the effect of Donald Trump's comments this week. Alt-Right groups in 2017 were responsible for more hate crime deaths than any other entity in the US. We discuss this with Lecia Brooks, our special guest from the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Lecia Brooks leads the Southern Poverty Law Center’s outreach efforts on key initiatives and social justice issues.
The SPLC is the premier U.S. non-profit organization monitoring the activities of domestic hate groups and other extremists and is currently tracking more than 1,600 extremist groups operating across the country. We are pleased to welcome Rachel Blank to the show to talk about strategies for LGBTQ2 people to tap into community resources. She introduces us to Pride Pocket, a virtual home for LGBTQ2 people and our initiatitves.
At its most fundamental, Pride Pocket is a one-stop-shop for community resources and material support. It’s a place to turn for factual, informational articles, “guidebooks” about how to deal with situations that are more prevalent for LGBTQ+ individuals. Our panelist Brody Levesque tells it this way: "The Grey-haired old lady made her way to centre stage as the crowd of over 2500 in Pasadena, California’s historic Civic Auditorium politely applauded expectantly. What happened in those next couple of minutes last March, would propel the former middle-school English Language Arts teacher into public consciousness and validate her life-long held dream of being a recognised stand-up comedienne on the national stage.
From that initial audition on Simon Cowell’s wildly successful variety entertainment programme on NBC, America’s Got Talent, Julia Scotti has rapidly filled her schedule with engagements and shows. The YouTube videos of that first appearance have altogether garnered nearly 4.3 million views thus far and her fan base is rapidly expanding."
Tonight, she is ours... and if you listen in.... yours as well!
With panelists Brody Levesque and Karen Ocamb.

A Colorado baker’s case stood before the Supreme Court this week. Due to his view of religion, he felt compelled to reject a gay couple and their wedding cake order. Does he have the right to say no? According to Shannon Price Minter, Legal Director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the action the Supreme Court could take would “open the floodgates to discrimination in employment, healthcare, schools, and other settings. Businesses and others can simply claim that their anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination isn’t about LGBTQ+ people, just their “conduct” of being married, partnered, sexually active, transitioning, or even just openly LGBTQ+. In short, there is no way to limit the impact of a negative ruling just to wedding cakes or bakers.”
Tonight, I talk to Shannon Minter along with our distinguished board of journalists, Brody Levesque, Karen Ocamb and Dawn Ennis. We find out if anti-LGBTQ2 discrimination is about to be a sanctioned institution in the United States and what we can do about it.
The award-winning Shannon Price Minter, Legal Director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), was lead counsel for same-sex couples in the landmark California marriage equality case which held that same-sex couples have the fundamental right to marry and that laws that discriminate based on sexual orientation are inherently discriminatory and subject to the highest level of constitutional scrutiny.

Now it’s NBC’s Matt Lauer and Public Radio’s Garrison Keillor. Big names in Hollywood and the media continue to fall from the flood of sexual misconduct charges. But in Washington, politicians facing similar complaints remain in office.
Constitutional law professor Kimberly Wehle joins us to discuss why it’s easier to “can and ban” accused sexual predators in Hollywood than it is in DC. She examines the Constitutional reasons that deliberately make it hard to punish elected officials.
Kimberly Wehle is a University of Baltimore Law Professor, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney and associate independent counsel in the Whitewater investigation.

The current scandal involving Roy Moore is just the latest example of a moral cancer that plagues America. That cancer stems from the blending of Republicans who view themselves as the "true Christians" and "real Americans". It is a pseudo-morality that can be molded to be the antithesis of what it pretends to stand for -- as the recent scandal demonstrates, it can be bastardized to the point where it not only does not represent Christian or American founding principles, it is the exact opposite of both.
My journalist panel of Brody Levesque and Dawn Ennis is joined by the renown Kathy Baldock. Kathy Baldock, author, LGBT advocate, and Executive Director of CanyonWalker Connections, is a leading expert on LGBT issues in the United States, especially dealing with historical and current discrimination faced from the socially conservative Christian church and political sector.
