Hundreds of years ago, white pilgrims landed in what would eventually become the United States. Legend has it that they broke bread in a feast with the people who lived in the land, and that event became the United States Thanksgiving.  Fast forward to now. A group of LGBT pilgrims, breaking away from the Trump-Hysteria Caravan, have landed on the border of the same nation that birthed Thanksgiving. What awaits them? A party in power who fears and loathes them, threat of a wall and a militia.  Tonight, we talk to several of these modern day pilgrims, and to Aaron Jackson and Chris Gris, activists, in the spirit of the first Thanksgiving, seek to help them.

Documenting a Gay Saint

Friday Nov 09, 2018

Friday Nov 09, 2018

Tonight we talk to filmmakers Bob Ostertag and Daniel Nicoletta about a soon-to-be produced documentary, Thanks to Hank.

Thanks to Hank is the story of a gay saint, a liberation movement, a plague, and an approach to gay activism that puts poor people first.

Hank Wilson was the fiercest gay activist you never heard of.  In San Francisco during the 1970s and 80s, Hank was the Johnny Appleseed of gay liberation. Everywhere he went new organizations sprang up. Many are still with us. The AIDS Candlelight vigil he put together, five years before the formation of ACTUP, is now the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial, organized by 1,200 community organizations in 115 countries.

This documentary will tell his story with the help of star of Orange is the New Black Lea DeLaria, former California State Assembyperson Tom Ammiano, The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and the Kronos Quartet.

This week, LGBTQ icon Matthew Shepard was finally laid to rest.  He was interred at Washington, DC’s National Cathedral, as Bishop (retired) Gene Robinson, an LGBTQ icon himself officiated. Bishop Gene was a firebrand issue when he became the first openly gay Episcopal bishop years ago.
“There are three things I’d say to Matt: ‘Gently rest in this place. You are safe now. And Matt, welcome home.’ Amen.” he stated.
Tonight, we have Bishop Gene as our guest.  We will talk to him about love, spirit, historic events and his apology to those hurt by religious communities.

Twenty years ago a young gay man was beaten and left for dead, tied to a stark and lonely fence in the plains of Wyoming. His name was Matthew Shepard.  Twenty years ago to the day tomorrow, he died.
His death brought shock, horror and grief to millions who did not personally know him. It brought a much more personal effect on our guest tonight, Jim Osborn.
Jim Osborn is University of Wyoming’s Title IX coordinator, where he works to prevent sexual discrimination and misconduct.  Jim was a friend of Matthew Shepard He describes Shepard as someone who believed in “the beauty of people and humanity” in all forms. When Shepard died, Osborn made a promise to him. “I vowed that I would do everything in my power to pick up where he left off and to use my voice in any way that I could because his voice had been silenced,That’s part of the reason that I’m here 20 years later still today, telling his story and sharing his legacy and his way of looking at people.”
Tonight, he tells us that story, as does journalist Brody Levesque who covered the Shepard murder, on the scene, as a young reporter, two decades ago.

We are all about stories, and our guest tonight, is one of the greatest presenters of LGBTQ stories.  We are talking to Nathan Manske—director of the I’m From Driftwood.
Through stories of various individuals, the program’s mission : “To the LGBT teens struggling to come out and deal with their sexuality, who to this day still attempt suicide 4 times more than straight kids, it says “you are not alone.” Other people have dealt with similar situations, families, communities and churches, and have overcome and are now living happy lives. It can happen for you, too. It gets so much better, I promise. -- To the people who don’t support equal rights, it says we’re not all that different after all. We all have stories and problems and loves and lives just like everyone else. So maybe we should all be treated like everyone else, too. --To the true story and short story enthusiasts, it says “Yay! True short stories!
Brody and I find out Nathan’s story tonight…
