We talk about LGBTQ military tonight!  A new bill has been introduced that seeks to ensure service members discharged under the policy are eligible for care from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Of that bill, House Representative Joseph Kennedy III says:
“The bias and bigotry of this president should not be used to deny health care to any LGBTQ veteran who has served this nation. By passing the SERVE Act, we will protect transgender veterans until the day we overturn this cruel, misguided ban on transgender troops.”
Also-- LGBTQ military nonprofits OutServe-SLDN and the American Military Partner Association are merging to form the Modern Military Association of America, which will be the nation’s largest organization dedicated to education, advocacy, and support for LGBTQ service members, military spouses, veterans, family members, and allies.
Andy Blevins , Executive Director of Modern Military Association of America (MMAA) is our guest!  He will be discussing the merger, the new bill and how LGBTQ advocates are fighting back against the transphobia war.

The Equality Act comes up in the House tomorrow. It will, if passed, amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Fair Housing Act to ban anti-LGBT discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, jury service, education, federal programs and credit.
It takes extra steps previous acts have not:  In addition to transgender inclusion, the bill seeks to update federal law to include sex in the list of protected classes in public accommodation and expands the definition of public accommodations to include retail stores, banks, transportation services and health care services. Further, the Equality Act would establish that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act — a 1994 law aimed at protecting religious liberty — can’t be used to enable anti-LGBT discrimination.
On hand to discuss this historic measure with us is the National Press Secretary of the Human Rights Campaign, Sarah McBride. Sarah made national headlines when she came out as transgender to her college while serving as student body president at American University and is largely credited with the passage of legislation in Delaware banning discrimination on the basis of gender identity in employment, housing, insurance, and public accommodations.
In July 2016, she was a speaker at the Democratic National Convention, becoming the first openly transgender person to address a major party convention in American history.

The court announced on April 22 it would take up a trio of cases that will test the scope of sex discrimination protections under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
A ruling by the justices could also have implications outside of the workplace. Title VII case law often is cited as precedent in other civil rights contexts. A bad ruling could damage years of LGBTQ gains, including marriage.
Our special guest, Chris Stoll explains it all to us.
Chris Stoll is a Senior Staff Attorney at the National Center for Lesbian Rights.  He has over two decades of experience litigating cases to protect the rights of LGBT people. He represented LGBT couples in marriage equality cases around the country, including the 2015 Supreme Court case that established the freedom to marry nationally, and currently represents the plaintiffs in cases challenging the Trump Administration’s ban on military service for transgender people.  He also has been involved in many cases seeking to establish legal protections for LGBT workers, students, and tenants under federal and state anti-discrimination laws.

This week, the Trump administration launched its war against transgender service members. Contrary to earlier reports, the directive is full scale --- going after current serving fully transitioned individuals as well as all along the transitioning process.
We talk to one such distinguished soldier, LCDR Blake Dremann .  Blake is an active duty service member who just happens to be transgender. He has deployed 11 times over the water, under the water and to Afghanistan. He is also the President of SPARTA, a Transgender Military Advocacy group working to educate leaders and support service members. On Feb 27, Blake was one of 5 service members to testify to Congress on open transgender service.
