First they came after transgender people, then they in latest Supeme Court briefs have come after gay people. They have come after immigrants. Now they are coming after kids who should qualify to become American Citizens.
The Trump administration announced new citizenship rules for some children of U.S. service members serving abroad, creating confusion among legal scholars and immigration attorneys and drawing condemnation from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services released an 11-page memo Wednesday that initially implied children of American citizens would no longer have automatic citizenship if born in another country starting on Oct. 29. Instead, parents would have to apply for citizenship on behalf of the child.
Our guest is Peter Perkowski, Legal Director for the Modern Military Association of America, the nation’s leading advocacy organization representing the LGBTQ and HIV+ military community, including service members, veterans, Dept of Defense civilians, and their spouses and families.

A sad reality of homophobic activists in our society is that many times they have a close relative-- a sister, a son, a brother, a daughter -- who is LGBT. This makes their actions even more heinous. They are actively hurting someone they are supposed to love. Phyllis Schlafly, Michelle Backman, Pete Knight, Newt Gingrich... the list goes on.
Now add "Straight Pride" organizer Mylinda Mason to that list. Her son Matthew is gay. And he is on with us today!
The Stanislaus County Straight Pride Parade/Event was submitted last month for a permit by a group calling itself the National Straight Pride Coalition. It is slated to take place in Modesto on August 24.

Comments from an interview in June went somewhat viral this week. He said of raising a young transgender child:"My God, if you’re 3 years old and you’re saying you’re feeling a certain way, or you think you’re a boy or a girl or whatever the case may be, I just think it’s dangerous as a parent to make that determination then — ‘Okay, well then you’re going to be a boy or a girl,’ whatever the case may be. It’s sort of alarming and my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on.”
Tonight, we talk about both the misinformation of his statement, the backlash it has received and the talking points in the counter information that has come out, and his apology.
Lopez stated yesterday, "“The comments I made were ignorant and insensitive, and I now have a deeper understanding of how hurtful they were,” he said. “I have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I am going to use this opportunity to better educate myself. Moving forward I will be more informed and thoughtful.”
We feature singer activist Brody Ray, who wrote a rebuttal of Lopez's original remarks.

NYC-based artist and body painter Andy Golub will be bodypainting over 100 nude models in NYC’s Times Square on June 15th as part of an event called the Protest Against Divisiveness. Each model will be painted with their own message promoting unity and will then lead the assembled crowd down Broadway to join a song circle led by American Roots artist, Guy Davis, at the Flatiron Building. Other notable guests include civil rights attorney Ronald Kuby.
Tonight we talk to Andy... the how, why and nakedness of this huge event and the statement it will be making.
Golub has been organizing large scale body painting events around the world, including NYC Bodypainting Day, since 2014. Each year has a different purpose and theme, but all are transient expressions of living art. The event is put on by the Human Connection Arts, Andy's non-profit organization that spreads artistic freedom and builds communities of individuals. Its mission is to share who we are as human beings, to build a community accepting of ourselves and each other. Body Painting is the vehicle we use to strip away the labels that prevent us from connection, accepting and loving each other.

Dublin California's first openly gay Councilmember, Shawn Kumagai thought it would be a wonderful thing for his town to recognize Pride month by flying a Rainbow Flag at city hall. The response was not just negative, it was horrifically homophobic and transphobic. Vitriol flew at the city council chambers-- accusation of pedophilia support to trumped up cries of the victimization of gun enthusiasts, and other outrageous appeals flew. Tonight, Shawn Kumagai joins us to share his fight for a symbol of acceptance and equality against a wave of ignorance and repression. Plus-- hot topics of the week!
