Our guest today is author Andrew Gelwicks!  We talk about Queer Super Powers.... which he has uncovered in his new book THE QUEER ADVANTAGE: Conversations with LGBTQ+ Leaders on the Power of Identity.  In the book, Gelwicks interviews people who are creating national policy, running billion-dollar tech enterprises, and winning Olympic medals. From Troye Sivan to Margaret Cho, George Takei to Billie Jean King, Shangela to Adam Rippon, each person credits their queer identity with giving them an edge on their path to success. Throughout Andrew’s interviews with these leaders, with variances in age, background, careers, and race, some key themes shine through.
Today we talk to him about those themes!
Andrew is a celebrity fashion stylist. He started in the fashion department at GQ and later worked in celebrity booking for Teen VOGUE. His portfolio includes Catherine O’Hara, KJ Apa, Tommy Dorfman, Michael Douglas, Nicole Scherzinger, Lisa Rinna, Tove Lo, the Queer Eye cast, and Dascha Polanco, among many others. The Tragedy of Heterosexuality

Thursday Oct 08, 2020

In the not so distant past, as many of us in the LGBTQ persuassion were growing up, it would often be said-- by others and sometimes by our selves-- "Who would choose to be gay?"
The idea was that in this heteronormative world, being LGBTQ was "queer"--  odd, ridiculed and in a sense... a tragedy.  Author Jane Ward is giving us a different perspective...
After a life of observing heterosexuals and THEIR culture... she is drawing a different conclusion.  There actually is a tragedy to being heterosexual.
Today we talk to her about her new book... aptly titled The Tragedy of Heterosexuality.
Jane Ward is Professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of California, Riverside, where she teaches courses in feminist, queer, and heterosexuality studies. She is the author of Not Gay: Sex between Straight White Men (NYU Press, 2015) and Respectably Queer: Diversity Culture in LGBT Activist Organizations.

Trump has tried to make voting by mail an "issue", even though he himself plans to vote that way.  Obviously, the process is a sound one, and the attempt is actually to intimidate voters from participating in the election.  Well, some creative activists are doing something about that.
Our guests today are Barbie , and Kadar Small-- the creative forces behind a new Public Service Announcement video produced by Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. The video, PLANNING TO VOTE BY MAIL THIS NOVEMBER? HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW, was made for and by the young, queer BIPOC community, many of whom will be voting absentee for the first time in November,.
The video explains how to avoid the common mistakes that could cause their mail-in ballots to be disqualified. It is a must-see for everyone voting by mail, or wanting to-- in order to get used to the process and to feel comfortable using it.  Don't let anyone surpress your vote!
Especially someone who has every intention of doing so for his own gain.
Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights is led by human rights activist and lawyer Kerry Kennedy, and has advocated for a more just and peaceful world since 1968. They work alongside local activists to ensure lasting positive change in governments and corporations. Their team includes leading attorneys, advocates, entrepreneurs and writers united by a commitment to social justice.

Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump are making an unfettered and unapologetic assault on the legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Any past promises, assertions or principles espoused by GOP Senate members are but tattered road-kill on their mad scramble for unprescidented conservative domination of the US Supreme Court.
What will that mean for American citizens?  Certainly Women's reproductive rights will be demolished.  Today we talk to an expert on what can be expected by the Court that is sure to come.
We welcome Kate Kendell, Interim Legal Director at the Southern Poverty Law Center as our guest.  For 22 years, Kate led the National Center for Lesbian Rights, a national legal organization committed to advancing the civil and human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their families through litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education. Kate stepped down from this role at the end on 2018, served as Campaign Manager for Take Back the Court, an organization committed to structural reform of the U.S. Supreme Court until October 2019.
What cases are making their way up to the Court and what will their outcomes look like?  What new cases are likely to emerge?  Will same sex marriage be again on the table?
We will find out!  Join us.  With co-host Brody Levesque.
