The Secrets of Communists in the Closets with Famed Activist Bettina Aptheker!

Today we talk to famed author, activist and Distinguished Professor Emerita, Bettina Aptheker!
Bettina's new book is Communists In Closets, Queering the History 1930s-1990s. 
The book explores the history of gay, lesbian, and non-heterosexual people in the Communist Party in the United States. The Communist Party banned lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people from membership beginning in 1938 when it cast them off as "degenerates." It persisted in this policy until 1991. Bettina's book tells the stories of those who were forced to live in this very segmented "closet".
Bettina was a high profile activist in the 1960s and 70s, and an acclaimed author and educator. After completing her master's degree, Bettina taught African-American and Women's Studies at San José State University. In the early 1980s, she completed a doctorate in the History of Consciousness program at the University of California Santa Cruz .Since 1980, she has taught in the Feminist Studies department there.

In the House: Filmmaker Michiel Thomas and His New Film GEMMEL & TIM

Gemmel & Tim explores the lives and untimely passings of Gemmel Moore and Timroy Dean, two Black gay men who both died from meth overdoses at the home of West Hollywood politico Ed Buck. Their deaths at the now-infamous apartment sent shockwaves through the LGBTQ+ community. The ensuing media circus cooked up a spicy concoction of sex, drugs, race and politics, but had no appetite for the in-depth human stories of who these individuals truly were. This documentary looks at Gemmel and Tim’s parallel walks of life. Powerful and galvanizing, Gemmel & Tim simultaneously investigates the crimes and offers a cautionary tale to keep these events from repeating. The film premiered at Outfest Los Angeles 2021.
Belgian native Michiel Thomas is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, cinematographer and editor based in Los Angeles, CA. His debut documentary GAME FACE was distributed worldwide by Netflix in 2016, screened at more than 50 international film festivals and won a dozen awards. His second feature doc THAT'S WILD, was acquired by AMC Networks, screened at over 30 film festivals in 5 continents and won 5 awards.

Super Talent Simon Curtis Launches His New Single and Debut Graphic Novel!

Simon Curtis is live with us today!  A proud member of the LGBTQ community, Simon survived cancer at age 10.  That launched him into a creative carreer that includes being an actor, author ("Boy Robot") and a successful singer/songwriter.  His high energy pop has been listened to well over 50 million times.
He recently launched three new singles and we will be debuting one, Fairy Boy, today on our show!  We will also be talking about his debut graphic novel The Witches of Silverlake.
A teaser for Witches reads: "Elliot Green has had a rough year.
