The award winning documentary No Straight Lines shows how comic books and strips have provided a unique, uncensored window into LGBTQ lives from the 1970s onward, beginning at a time in which there was no other genuine queer storytelling in popular culture. The film focuses on the story of five scrappy and pioneering cartoonists who depicted everything from the AIDS crisis, coming out, and same-sex marriage, to themes of race, gender, and disability. They tackled the humor in queer lives in a changing world, and the everyday pursuits of love, sex, and community.
Today we talk to the film's producer/director Vivlan Kleinman! Vivian is known for tackling challenging subjects and filmic approaches. She executive produced the Academy Award nominated documentary short Last Day of Freedom; she produced the Peabody Award-winning Color Adjustment; and was director/producer of Families Are Forever (Outfest Audience Award) as well as other significant credits.

Mid November a gun man killed 5 at Club Q in Colorado. 17 were injured. The Club was a well known venue for drag performances and an easy target for anti-LGBTQ hate.
This week, there was a House Committee meeting looking into the growing anti-LGBTQ violence in America. Survivors of both the Club Q and Pulse masacres spoke. “To the politicians and activists who accuse LGBTQ people of grooming children and being abusers: shame on you,” Michael Anderson, Club Q survivor said to them. “As leaders of our country, it is your obligation to represent all of us, not just the ones you happen to agree with. Hate speech turns into hate action, and actions based on hate almost took my life from me, at 25 years old.” Club Q owner Matthew Haynes responded to GOP "thoughts and prayers" saying, "I ask you today, not simply what are you doing to safeguard LGBTQ Americans; but rather, what are you or other leaders doing to make America unsafe for LGBTQ people."
Today we discuss these attacks with two very close to the issue. Sara Grossman, whose dear friend was killed in the Pulse shooting, and renown drag performer Jessica L'Whor , who was a regular headliner at Club Q.

Back in 2020 we did a show called "The Inspiring Teen CEO Whose Company Helps the Homeless and Those In Need" featuring teen Kenan Pala. Kenan had founded a company called Kids4Community. When last we spoke to him, his organization had just made 2000 hygene kits, and 500 "bags of hope" for distribution to the homeless. They conducted a school supply drive, and took on disaster relief. They undertook homeless dinner projects and more. All of this was done mostly by kids,
Kenan is now off to college and today we talk to his younger brother Arden. Not to be overshadowed by his incredible older brother, Arden himself is the the founder of Sports4Kids.Through community and philanthropic partnerships, Sports4Kids provides opportunities for all low-income youth to play sports, building physical and social skills that will serve them for a lifetime.
Today, we talk to Arden about his work, avocation and mission.

Some times life is even more fascinating than fiction. Behind the mystique of "Sunset Boulvard" is a nuanced parallel story of a fading star, her unrequited love for a stunning younger man, and the gay love story it complicated. This story is not fiction, however, it was real.
Dickson Hughes and Richard Stapley were two young songwriters and romantic partners in the 1950s. They found themselves caught in movie star Gloria Swanson’s web when she hired them to write a musical version of “Sunset Boulevard" long before the Andrew Lloyd Webber version was even imagined. Life imitated art when Gloria fell in love with Richard, and Dixon and Richard found themselves trapped in a strange real life version of the classic Wilder film.
Jeffrey Schwartz has brought the true story to life in the documentary Boulevard! A Hollywood Story, now streaming on iTunes and Apple+. He is here with us today to talk about this true life romantic triangle and telling the world a new version of Sunset Boulevard. Jeffrey is an Emmy Award-winning producer, director and editor. His previous documentaries include “The Fabulous Allan Carr,” which premiered at the 2017 Seattle International Film Festival, the 2015 SXSW premiere “Tab Hunter Confidential,” the Emmy Award-winning HBO Documentary Films’ “Vito,” “I Am Divine,” currently streaming on Netflix, “Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon,” currently streaming on Amazon Prime, and the 2007 AFI Fest Documentary Audience Award winner “Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story.”
